Candy Cane Coral Care Guide

Scientific Name: Caulastrea furcata
Common Names: Candy Cane Coral, Trumpet Coral

Overview

The Candy Cane Coral is a hardy and beginner-friendly LPS (Large Polyp Stony) coral that adds vibrant colour and movement to your reef tank. Known for its distinct, trumpet-like polyps with neon green or blue centres, this coral thrives in a range of conditions, making it a popular choice for both new and experienced reef keepers.

Care Level: Easy

Temperament: Peaceful

Lighting: Low to Moderate (PAR 50-150)

Flow: Moderate

Placement: Bottom to Middle of the Tank

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 75-80°F
  • Salinity: 1.024-1.026 SG
  • pH: 8.1-8.4
  • Alkalinity: 8-12 dKH
  • Calcium: 400-450 ppm
  • Magnesium: 1250-1350 ppm
  • Nitrates: <10 ppm
  • Phosphates: <0.03 ppm

Feeding

Candy Cane Corals are photosynthetic but benefit from supplemental feeding. Offer zooplankton, phytoplankton, or meaty foods like mysis shrimp and reef roids 1-2 times per week for faster growth. Feed at night when polyps extend.

Growth & Propagation

This coral grows by forming new heads, which can be fragged easily by cutting between the polyps with bone cutters.

Compatibility

Candy Cane Corals are peaceful and can be placed near other non-aggressive corals. However, give them space to avoid crowding.

Acclimation & Care Tips

  • Drip acclimate for at least 30 minutes before introducing to the tank.
  • Avoid excessive direct flow, which can stress the polyps.
  • Maintain stable water parameters to prevent tissue recession.
