Pocillopora Coral Care Guide
Pocillopora corals are a stunning addition to any reef aquarium, known for their vibrant colours and unique growth patterns. They are a hardy Small Polyp Stony (SPS) coral, making them a great choice for reef keepers looking to venture into SPS care. Follow these guidelines to ensure your Pocillopora thrives in your reef tank.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 75-80°F (24-27°C)
- Salinity: 1.025 specific gravity (35 ppt)
- pH: 8.1-8.4
- Alkalinity: 8-12 dKH
- Calcium: 400-450 ppm
- Magnesium: 1250-1350 ppm
- Nitrates: <5 ppm
- Phosphates: <0.03 ppm
Lighting Requirements:
Pocillopora corals thrive under moderate to high lighting conditions. LED, T5, or metal halide lights with a PAR range of 200-350 are recommended for optimal growth and colouration.
Flow Requirements:
Provide moderate to high water flow to mimic natural reef conditions. Pocillopora benefits from random, turbulent flow rather than direct linear flow to prevent tissue damage and promote healthy growth.
Placement in Tank:
- Place Pocillopora in an area with good water movement and strong lighting.
- Avoid placing it too close to aggressive corals, as it may engage in chemical warfare.
Feeding & Nutrition:
While Pocillopora corals derive most of their energy from photosynthesis via their symbiotic zooxanthellae, they also benefit from occasional feedings.
- Supplemental feeding: Phytoplankton, zooplankton, or coral foods such as Reef-Roids or Polyp Booster.
- Feed 1-2 times per week for optimal health.
Growth & Propagation:
Pocillopora corals are known for rapid growth and can even self-propagate by releasing small fragments that settle elsewhere in the tank. If fragging, use a coral cutter and mount new pieces on plugs or rock using reef-safe glue or epoxy.
Common Issues & Troubleshooting:
- Bleaching or colour loss → Check lighting intensity and nutrient levels; adjust as needed.
- Algae growth → Ensure proper water flow and maintain stable water parameters.
- Tissue recession → May indicate poor water quality or insufficient flow. Perform a water test and adjust accordingly.
Compatibility:
Pocillopora is generally peaceful but can compete for space. Avoid placing it near aggressive corals like Torch, Hammer, or Galaxea corals.
By maintaining stable water conditions, providing proper lighting and flow, and supplementing with occasional feedings, your Pocillopora coral will thrive and add beauty to your reef tank.
