Grandis Paly Coral Care Guide
Scientific Name: Palythoa grandis
Common Names: Grandis Paly, Giant Paly Coral
Overview
The Grandis Paly is a stunning soft coral known for its large, vibrant polyps that can captivate any reef enthusiast. With its ease of care and unique appearance, it’s a favourite among beginner and experienced aquarists alike.
Care Requirements
1. Placement:
- Lighting: Moderate to high (PAR 100-250). Use adjustable LED lights to find the coral's preferred intensity.
- Flow: Moderate flow to prevent detritus buildup and encourage natural movement without overwhelming the polyps.
- Tank Positioning: Place on the bottom or middle of the tank, allowing space for expansion as polyps can grow quite large.
2. Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 75–78°F (24–26°C)
- Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Nitrates: <10 ppm
-
Phosphates: <0.03 ppm
Maintain stable water parameters to prevent stress on the coral.
3. Feeding:
Grandis Paly corals benefit from supplemental feedings, though they can survive on photosynthesis alone. For optimal growth and vibrancy:
- Feed with small meaty foods like brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, or specialized coral foods.
- Feed 1-2 times per week using a turkey baster or pipette for precise delivery.
4. Compatibility:
- Tankmates: Compatible with most reef-safe fish, invertebrates, and corals. Avoid aggressive coral species that may sting or outcompete for space.
- Caution: Handle with care as Palythoa species can produce palytoxin, a harmful substance if ingested or if it comes into contact with open wounds. Always wear gloves during handling.
Tips for Success
- Acclimation: Slowly acclimate the coral to your tank's lighting and water conditions using a drip acclimation process.
- Fragging: This coral can be fragged by experienced reefers, but take proper precautions due to the risk of palytoxin.
- Regular Maintenance: Ensure water flow keeps the coral clean, and remove any algae or detritus near its base.
Additional Notes
The Grandis Paly is a hardy and rewarding coral that can thrive in a variety of reef setups. Its vibrant colours and large polyps make it a standout addition to any tank. With proper care, it can live and grow for many years, providing endless beauty to your underwater ecosystem.
