Work Experience At The Coral Centre - June 2024

Gordon Dowling |

Earlier this month, we hosted a student from a local school for their work experience. Here’s a report from their week and what they got up to at Coral HQ.

“I did my work experience at The Coral Centre, Fareham.

At the beginning of the week, I shadowed Social Media manager Sinead creating content for the YouTube channel, and learning the basics when it came to feeding the fish and caring for the corals.

As the week progressed I helped the director/founder of the Coral Centre, Rob, complete water changes and analyse the water chemistry levels.

On my last couple of days I worked with operations and coral propagation manager, Leigh-Marie, fragging corals (coral propagation) and carrying out marine aquarium welfare practices.

My highlight of the week was fragging corals and learning how corals grow. I was able to have a very hands-on experience which made my time at The Coral Centre so interesting and valuable. This experience has only helped deepen my interest in marine life. This has been an amazing experience and the facts I have learnt this week will stay with me.”

Thank you for joining us this week! We are really happy that you had a great week with us. With more work experience students visiting in the coming weeks, we will continue doing our part to educate the coming generations about corals, their importance and the general welfare of the Earth’s marine environment.

We’re proud to support and guide students in any way we can. This includes field trips to Coral HQ for students to learn about tanks, corals, CoralPod, and all associated marine life. We also organise dedicated sessions on coral research, restoration, and resilience.

Our Director, Rob Peck, is a keen advocate for educating future generations. As one of the foremost experts on coral in the UK, his plethora of knowledge, connections, and enthusiasm is a real asset via short educational tours, talks and fundraisers for schools looking to do something different for their students.

We partner with the Future Oceans Foundation to provide and deliver experiences for younger generations to inspire our future conservationists.

One way we achieve this through our partnership is by installing a CoralPod at a school. This installation has several benefits for students and our coral ecosystem alike. It can serve as an educational tool for teaching students about coral reef ecology, biodiversity and conservation.

The CoralPod can serve as the first splash into an ocean of unexplored opportunities for students to begin their personal journey in protecting marine life. If you would like to learn more about how we can help your students, we encourage you to visit the Future Oceans Foundation website.
