Green Star Polyp (GSP) Coral Care Guide

Green Star Polyps (Pachyclavularia sp.) is a vibrant, fast-growing soft coral perfect for beginner and experienced reef keepers. Their neon green polyps create a stunning, flowing effect in any reef aquarium.

Care Requirements:

Lighting:

Moderate to high lighting (PAR 100-250)

Adapts well to various lighting conditions but thrives under blue spectrum LED lighting

Water Flow:

Moderate to strong flow

Helps prevent detritus buildup and encourages healthy polyp extension

Placement:

Attach to rocks, frag plugs, or tank glass

Keep away from slow-growing corals, as GSP spreads quickly and may overgrow neighbours

Water Parameters:

Temperature: 76-82°F (24-28°C)

Salinity: 1.024-1.026 SG

pH: 8.1-8.4

Alkalinity: 8-12 dKH

Calcium: 400-450 ppm

Magnesium: 1250-1350 ppm

Feeding:

Primarily photosynthetic but benefits from occasional target feeding with phytoplankton or coral foods

Growth & Maintenance:

Fast-growing and can spread rapidly

Trim or isolate on separate rocks to control growth

Regular water changes and stable parameters keep GSP healthy

Compatibility:

Generally peaceful but can overtake slower-growing corals

Safe for most reef-safe fish and invertebrates

Common Issues:

Closed polyps: May indicate low flow, poor water quality, or lack of light

Overgrowth: Keep it contained on an isolated rock to prevent spreading

Green Star Polyps are resilient, easy-to-care-for coral that adds movement and colour to any reef tank. Keep them in check, and they’ll be a beautiful addition to your aquarium!
