Acropora Coral Care Guide
Acropora corals are a stunning addition to any reef aquarium, known for their intricate structures and vibrant colors. To ensure these corals thrive in your tank, follow our comprehensive care guide below:
Tank Requirements
- Lighting: Acroporas require intense lighting, such as LED, T5, or metal halide systems, to mimic their natural habitat. Aim for PAR levels between 200-400.
- Flow: Provide strong, turbulent water flow to remove debris and promote healthy growth. Use adjustable powerheads for optimal flow.
- Tank Size: Minimum of 40 gallons, though larger tanks are preferable for stability.
Water Parameters
- Temperature: Maintain a stable range of 75°F - 78°F (24°C - 26°C).
- pH: Between 8.1 and 8.4.
- Salinity: 1.024 - 1.026 specific gravity.
- Alkalinity: 8-12 dKH.
- Calcium: 400-450 ppm.
- Magnesium: 1250-1350 ppm.
Feeding
While Acroporas derive much of their energy from photosynthesis via their symbiotic zooxanthellae, they also benefit from supplemental feeding. Provide:
- Fine particulate foods such as phytoplankton or marine snow.
- Target feed occasionally using a turkey baster or coral feeder.
Placement
- Place Acroporas in the upper portion of your reef tank to ensure adequate lighting and flow.
- Allow at least 4-6 inches of space between Acroporas and other corals to prevent aggression.
Maintenance Tips
- Conduct regular water tests and perform weekly water changes (10-20%) to maintain pristine conditions.
- Monitor for pests like red bugs or flatworms; treat with coral dips as needed.
- Avoid sudden changes in lighting, flow, or water parameters to prevent stress and bleaching.
Compatibility
- Compatible with most peaceful reef-safe fish and invertebrates.
- Avoid placing them near aggressive or stinging corals.
By following these guidelines, your Acropora corals will flourish, adding vibrant life and beauty to your aquarium.
